For the first time in domestic and foreign historiography the object to study was a unique complex of sources during the Second World War – wall inscriptions in the Nazi prisons on the territory of the occupied Soviet Union. The inscriptions gives a great amount of information about Nazi terror during the occupation period, as well as about it’s victims. The researches have given the possibility to trace the fate of victims in the Nazi prisons, aims and main activities of the Soviet secret services, that used epigraphic sources as a starting point of operational-investigative work. The humanitarian component of the project is intended to show the names of unknown victims, to show the new ways to search the information about vanished relatives during the occupying. The publication also stimulates the identification of documents, that for a long time remained unnoticed by researchers.

In the scientific and documentary publication the materials about the events of the Second World War in Kyiv are submitted. Through the prism of the Soviet secret police documents, the Nazi secret police and civilian occupation administration, most of which are published at first, the authors of the collection tried to understand the place of the capital society in the functioning of the state structures, to show the impact of the war on the live of the ordinary citizen. New documents from the State Archives of the Security Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Central State Archives of Ukraine and the State Archive of Kiev region make it possible to recreate a complete picture of the life in the city during total violence, to present the controversial points of view, and to answer the question that most disturbed the ordinary citizens, how did they organize their life, survived, overcame adversity and hardship, how they built their relationship with the government.
